5 great Amsterdam hotels

Amsterdam hotels

There are few cities I know better or have spent more time in than Amsterdam. After living in The Netherlands for almost 6 years and being landlocked there during the pandemic, Amsterdam got a lot of visits from me and the husband. And even though we went there all the time, I never got tired of this beautiful, cozy, picturesque, unique, quirky, messy and absolutely wonderful city.

Since I am not the only one who loves Amsterdam and has the urge to go there all the time, there are a lot of hotels in this fairly small city. Hotels that cater to all kinds of tastes. If you want to stay in a hipster hotel with a creative urban vibe, in a fancy upmarket hotel with a high-end luxury feel or in a cozy boutique hotel next to a canal, you’ll find it all and then some in Amsterdam.

Below I have listed five of my favorite hotels in Amsterdam, but trust me when I say that the list could easily be twice or three times as long.

Max Brown Canal District

This cute little boutique hotel is located right by Herengracht, one of the main canals of Amsterdam. What makes this hotel one of my favorites is that it gives you that authentic Amsterdam experience that very few other hotels (except for some that are really, really expensive) can offer. It is situated in one of those old, wonky canal houses where the staircase squeaks and the floor is slightly tilted. I love that we could lay in bed and watch the boats slowly glide by on the canal.

Volkshotel

There are so many different sides to Amsterdam. One is the quirky, creative and dare I say hipster side that I love so much. And as a consequence there is a number of hotels that embodies this alternative look and feel. One of my favorites in this category of hotels is Volkshotel. It is located in the buzzing east part of town in an old news paper HQ. What I love about this hotel is the unique design, the casual vibe and that it attracts locals that come here to work, eat, drink and play. I love hotels when visitors and locals mix.

Soho House

This hotel has it all. Yes, it is on the more lux end of the scale but sometimes you just have to treat yourself (if that is within one’s budget, of course). The design is forward thinking and unique. The service is amazing and you have a great restaurant, bar,, cinema, gym, spa and roof top pool in house. It is the kind of hotel that you don’t want to leave when staying here, but simply just enjoy all the different things on site. We just ended up having a short walk outside and then spent as much time as possible within the four walls of the hotel wishing we could stay there forever.

Hoxton Amsterdam

If you are a frequent reader of this blog, you know I am a fan of the Hoxton chain. I appreciate how that always have hotels that fit into the vibe of the city they are located in. And this one is no exception. A hotel that has a mix of that typical Hoxton look combined with that relaxed Amsterdam vibe. And, the location is unbeatable. The hotel is sitting right on the Herengracht Canal in the 9 Stratjes area, filled with shopping, restaurants and great hangs. A perfect starting point for your Amsterdam adventure.

De Durgerdam

De Durgerdam is actually not IN Amsterdam but just outside. A nice, leisurely bike ride of 15 min along the water to get into the central part of town. With this said, this is a great option for someone that prefers to stay close to but not in downtown Amsterdam. And if you, like us, stayed here during Summer you can start and end your day with a dip in the IJ lake which was a welcome relief from the surprisingly hot Dutch Summer weather. And you know what, the hotel looks really great too.
