5 homely apartment hotels
Home away from home
Sometimes when I travel, especially when planning for a longer stay, I really appreciate apartment hotels. A space where you can fully do your own thing in your temporary home away from home..
Don’t get me wrong, I love all the service and the attention you get at a classic hotel, but especially (once again) when staying longer somewhere I tend to get bored after a while when doing the same routine over and over again (yes, I know I sound very spoiled). One of the first things I usually long for is to be able to cook something in a fully equipped kitchen. And then cozying up in a sofa and having a night in, while still being away.
Lucky for me and everyone else who are also apartment hotel fans, there are some really great ones out there, and they seem to just increase in numbers. I guess that is a sign that I am not alone in this particular fan club.
Below I have listed 5 of my favorite apartment hotels of the ones I have stayed at:
Berge / Aschau im Chiemgau, Germany
Berge is located in Bavaria, south Germany, in a small village, close to the Austrian border and is an apartment hotel where every single unit is unique. There are different themes to all the studios, all created by local furniture designer Moorman. The only problem when staying here is deciding which one to book. They all look so good in their own way.

Benedict / Noordwijk, Netherlands
The Dutch coast is often overlooked as a vacation destination, which is a shame. There are beautiful beaches framed by grass-covered sand dunes where there are bike paths, snaking their way through the landscape. Along this stretch of coast there is a town called Noordwijk and it is here you’ll find the Benedict. A subtle, minimalist pearl of an apartment hotel, a short walk from the beach.

Palihouse Santa Monica / LA, CA, USA
In a calm, residential part of Santa Monica you’ll find this gem of a hotel. It is part of the ever expanding Palisociety chain, a chain that always offers unique hotels with quirky yet elegant design. And this one is no exception. There is a nostalgic look to the kitchen which makes me want to bake classic American apple pies or cook an oversized Thanksgiving turkey.

Atto Suites / San Candido, Italy
Atto Suites is a sleek apartment hotel located in the small village of San Candido, in the northern Italy, literally on the border to Austria. Atto is purely minimalistic both on the outside and the inside. The outside is a stern dark grey while the interior is all about blond wood and rendered walls. Ask for an apartment as high up as possible since that will offer you a wonderful view of the Dolomites.

ROSSO / Altusried, Germany
ROSSO is one of those truly unique places, located in the south Germany countryside where the landscape is all about rolling hills, similar to Tuscany or the south of England. The design at ROSSO is anchored in the wabi-sabi movement so a lot of soft lines and quirky features. This is a cute little country retreat, perfect to spend some lazy Summer days.
