5 amazing hotel pools

Hotel pools

Come to think of it, it is somewhat strange that a pool can be seen as something amazing. It is usually just a tiled rectangular hole filled with water. But add an unexpected shape, a unique set of tiles or maybe the most important, an exceptional location and all off a sudden the word “amazing” makes full sense to use.

Looking back I am not sure where and when my love of pools started. Maybe I has something to do with watching all those American TV-shows when growing up where beautiful people were living their (eventful) lives in eternal sunshine, always close to (or in) a pool, like Melrose Place (ok, outdated reference warning!). Or maybe it was when seeing the iconic Slim Aaron’s photo of Faye Dunaway lounging by a pool in LA post the Academy Awards at an impressional age. Who knows!? Fact is, I love pools.

I have put together a list of five stunning hotel pools that I have been lucky enough to have a dip in. Enjoy your swim!

Guldsmeden Manon Les Suites / Copenhagen, Denmark

The first one on my list is actually an indoor pool. This one you’ll find at Manon Les Suites in Copenhagen, Denmark. The hotel belongs to Danish chain Guldsmeden, that is an expanding chain with eco-friendly hotels. What is so cool with this place is that you could never imagine that this jungle-like tropical pool would be hiding here when entering the hotel. The outside is so discreet but when you walk past the reception into the atrium this view makes you almost a little weak at the knees. It really is like being transported to some magical jungle somewhere while you are in the Danish capital.

Can Marti / Ibiza, Spain

This green beauty you’ll find at Can Marti, an agroturismo on the sunny island of Ibiza, Spain. What is so great with this pool (besides the fact that it is totally embedded in greenery) is that it is a natural pool. This means that there are no chemicals used in the water but what you’ll get instead are frogs. They are the cutest little fellows that join you when you go for a swim. I think this is such a brilliant way to find ways to be more sustainable when it comes to our use of chemicals and the impact it has on the environment. And this makes extra sense at a place like this sustainable-focused country retreat.

Miramonti / Avelengo, Italy

This might be my absolute favorite when it comes to hotel pools. It is to be found at the Miramonti Hotel, that sits high up on a mountain above the town of Merano in Italy’s South Tyrol region. What I love about this pool is simple. It is the view. To swim in an infinity pool on the same level as the surrounding mountain tops and soaring birds, leaves a strong lasting impression. I particurarly loved our early morning swims when we had the pool all to ourselves. It really felt like floating mid-air when swimming towards the edge of the pool. Like swimming and flying at the same time. Totally surreal!

Wilmina / Berlin, Germany

Roof top pools is such a treat when staying at urban hotels, especially in Summer. I love being able to come back to the hotel after a day, roaming the streets of any metropolis and then relax on a breezy roof terrace where you can refresh with a cool dip. One of the coolest roof top pools I have seen is this one, at Wilmina Hotel in Berlin. Not only is on the roof of an old women’s prison but it has a transparent bottom, so you can see people as they are swimming from the atrium below. And with its geometric shape it almost becomes a moving piece of art, a modern fresco.

Sparrows Lodge / Palm Springs, CA, USA

This one is the closest to what I saw in all those American TV-shows in my youth. A sun-drenched pool, lined with palm trees and people hanging out, listening to soft music and having drinks in comfy sun loungers. Sparrows Lodge is located in the desert fav Palm Springs where you can find several of these old motels that have been gently brought into the 21st century. And in the photo you see the husband and our two friends Jack and Tanja enjoying a lazy afternoon poolside.
