Classic hotel in Skagen, Denmark that used to be a hang out for the famous Skagen painters

Brøndums Hotel / Skagen / Jylland / Denmark

There is something magical about Skagen in Denmark. This cute little town on the northern tip of the Danish peninsula of Jylland, where two seas meet. The famous Skagen painters knew this and today people come to enjoy the famous light, eat delicious smørrebrød and bask in that wonderful Danish hygge. In this picturesque little hamlet, there is a classic hotel that has been around forever, the Brøndums Hotel.

Looking back in time, the hotel was built back in 1859 by local merchant Erik Brøndum. He was given a permit to house overnight guests in his red brick building so he furnished a couple of rooms and that was the start of the Brøndums Hotel. As Skagen started to become a hot spot for what would become some of the most famous Danish painters, they often ended up having drinks and dinner at the hotel. Artists like Marie & P.S. Krøyer, Holger Drachmann and Anna and Michael Ancher all stayed here. Fact is that Anna Ancher was the daughter of hotel owner Erik.

Today Brøndums is a cozy, typically Danish hotel with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A lot of the features from yesteryear are still present, like the beautiful reception and the restaurant with massive window sections with trademark muntins. There are 45 rooms located in the main building and the annex down the road. Our room was bright and airy white classic striped wall paper, vintage furniture and art.

When in Skagen you kind of have to visit Grenen, the tip of Denmark. Best way is to use the hotel bikes and then walk the last bit on the beach. Another place that is worth visiting, and easily reachable by bike, is Gamle Skagen where you can watch the sunset from front row on the beach, with a cold Danish beer in hand. Or bring some art supplies and try your luck. Who knows, you might be the next big thing coming out of this former artist colony.

Welcome to Brøndums Hotel!

I love this old reception…

…and hotels that have proper keys.

Checked in and ready to head to our room

Bright and with that signature striped wall paper which is standard in Danish seaside hotels.

Our room was furnished with vintage pieces that gave our room a rustic look and feel.

A corner of the hotel garden, perfect for some R&R in the shade.

The courtyard outdoor restaurant.

I love the restaurant with the old wooden floors, the vintage furniture and the beautiful statement windows.

If you don’t want to walk all the way to Grenen, the Sandormen can get you there.

Walking around Skagen. This little town is insanely picturesque.

Strolling along the high street, stopping for a soft-is.

Come morning, they set up a coffee station where you can come down for a cup before breakfast opens. A very appreciated gesture for coffee maniacs like us.

I love this vintage sign. Breakfast times rarely seem to change at Brøndum.

Danish breakfast is not to be missed. They know how to start the day in the best possible way.

This place is perfect if you…

…want to visit one of the cutest villages in Denmark and you are looking for a classic place to stay at that is oozing of Danish hygge and that is located close to the beach. Does this sound good to you? Then you should have a look at Brøndums.

My favorite thing about this place…

…is the morning coffee. Instead of having coffee makers in each room, come morning, they set up a coffee station where you can come down for your morning fix before breakfast starts. Love this idea!

What not to miss when staying here…

…is of course to go to Grenen, the main draw of Skagen where the Skagen painters created some of their most famous pieces of art. But something else not to be missed is Gammel Skagen (Old Skagen). Great to go there in the evening (easy to do with one of the hotel bikes) to watch the sun set in Vesterhavet. Remember to stop by one of the excellent Danish super markets to buy some picknick to enjoy on the beach.
